You just spent a small fortune on your new flat screen TV. The last thing you want is for your flat panel to lie against the wall for a few months, pay another small fortune to have a “professional install” it, or hang it only to come home and find it dangling by a cord or worse yet shattered on the floor. Not to worry, mounting your own flat panel TV is an easy DIY home project. With the right tools, equipment, and an extra set of hands you can easily mount your flat panel TV to the wall in about an hour. Installing your own flat panel TV is not difficult and you should be able to do it without any problem.

DIY Tools You Need to Mount a Flat Panel TV
Assemble your tools before beginning any DIY project. Mounting your flat panel TV requires only a few basic tools:
Tape measure
Level – laser or standard
Stud finder
Screw drivers
Wrench
bladed knife
Drill

DIY Additional Supplies to Mount a Flat Panel TV
You will need a standard flat panel wall mount that is designed to hold the size and weight of your television. You should have been sold a wall mount when you purchased your set. If not, find a wall mount that matches your flat panel TV's specifications, pay particular attention to size and weight.

Before you begin this DIY project make sure you have an adequate amount of TV cable to reach the location where the television will be mounted.

You will also need a wall box through which to run the A/V cable and power cable, and electrical tape.

DIY: How to Prepare to Mount Your Flat Screen TV
Decide where the flat panel television will be mounted on the wall. Use the stud finder to check vertical placement. The flat panel TV mount will need to be attached to two studs. You will be attaching four anchor bolts to the studs one at the top of the flat panel mount and one at the bottom.

Some installers mount flat panel LCD televisions on one stud and toggle the other side through sheetrock. You should only find this necessary if you are mounting an extremely small TV, or your wall studs are not placed to standard building specs. Personally, I would work to find a place where both sides of the TV mount will anchor to studs.

Mark the horizontal and vertical locations where you will position the TV mount.

Before you begin to mount your flat panel TV, use the stud finder to make sure there are no obstructions or horizontal braces between the location for the flat screen mount and where the video and power cables will exit the wall. There is usually a power outlet next to where your cable feed enters the room.

Since this is a DIY project, it is best to run the wires through the wall from the TV to the appropriate external connections.

DIY: How to Prepare the Wall and Run Cords and Cables
You are now ready to attach the panel mount's wall brackets to the back of the TV. There should be four threaded screw holds to attach the brackets to the flat panel. Once this is done you may want to check the positioning of the brackets in relation to the wall mount. This will give you a better idea of where to attach the wall mount.

Put the television and mount to the side while you trace a cut on the sheetrock for the wall box where the A/V and power cables exit the wall near the power source. You will also need a wall box behind the TV. In the end it will be positioned behind the TV, but it will be easier to work with connections if the wall box behind the TV is not behind the wall mount.

Cut out the sheetrock with the bladed knife and install the wall boxes. Run the cable and power cord, if it is detachable from the flat panel TV, through the wall boxes. Hollow walls are easy to run cables through. Insulated walls may require stiff wire which will enable you to hook and fish the cable down through the wall to the exit wall mount.

DIY: How to Mount the Flat Panel TV to the Wall
Position the wall mount using your previous pencil markings and a level. Double check to be sure you are positioning your LCD or plasma TV at a comfortable viewing position.

Use the wall mount to mark anchor holes on the wall. Use a sheetrock screw or small drill bit to start a screw hole into the studs.

Use a wrench to begin your first anchor and secure it tightly to the stud. Anchor the remaining three bolts. At this point the wall mount should be stable.

Have someone assist you in lifting the flat panel and positioning it in place on the wall mount.

Attach the cables and get ready to enjoy your new LCD or Plasma.

Double Check the Security of your Flat Panel Installation
Before you finish make sure the fittings on the brackets are secured to the wall mount. This adds an extra measure of security.

If the brackets and wall mount are secure there should be no problem with your flat panel LCD or Plasma TV staying securely in place.
